Packaging Inspiration - Topshop Makeup

I rarely get involved in any kind of packaging design, it's something that has never really been required in my current or previous roles. Nonetheless, excellent examples of packaging can really be a thing of beauty, something so intriguing that you just have to take it off the shelf for closer examination.

The Topshop make up packaging has always been one of those examples, beautiful in it's simplicity and impressive in it's finish and detail. The packaging was designed by Sarah Thorne, the work on her website is most definitely worth checking out.

Following on from my previous post regarding hand rendered typography, this is another wonderful sample. The type adds a playful feel which is embellished with other hand drawn mark making, it makes me want to open the boxes and play with the makeup inside; it doesn't take itself too seriously and it feels excitingly experimental. An adult edge is added with the foiling and scalloped edges, which adds a more luxury feel. If anything, I feel this is a lesson on the power of finishes; how a touch of foiling or die cutting can really make something disposable, like packaging, feel far more precious.
